Description of Contest

Fashion Revue is a contest that aims to increase youths’ knowledge of consumerism, textiles, and garment construction while providing opportunities to express fashion trends and present themselves in an appropriate manner. Categories exist for purchased and constructed garments.

Levels of Competition

Unit (county), District, State

Age categories are as follows, using September 30th of the 4-H year as the determining date. The exception is for national contests, in which January 1 or another date may be used. It is the contestant’s responsibility to check national rules for age deadlines.

Juniors (ages 9-11)
Intermediates (ages 12-13)
Seniors (ages 14-18)

Category I—Participants are 4-H members who have constructed a garment (clothing, costume, etc.)

Category II—Participants are 4-H members who selected and purchased garments or had them constructed by someone other than the 4-H member.

Awards to be Earned

Awards will be given for each age group in each category: I) Constructed Garment and II) Purchased Garment

The Danish awards system will be used at all levels of competition. Blue ribbons will be awarded to competitors earning 90-100 points; red ribbons will be awarded to competitors earning 75-89 points; white ribbons will be awarded to competitors earning 74 points or less.

Certain Extension districts award a purple ribbon to the highest scoring youth in the category. At the state contest, the highest scoring youth will be awarded a project medal. Youth who win the state project medal are ineligible to compete in that category in future years.

Rules for this Contest

  1. Participants may enter a purchased “ready to wear” garment or a sewn “constructed” garment. Category I is for constructed garments. Category II is for purchased garments.
  2. Participants should wear their garment and be ready to model.
  3. Participants should bring a change of clothes, so judges may examine garment off the model. Both constructed and purchased garments will be examined for workmanship.
  4. Participants should note the categories on the score sheet for judging.
  5. Participants will need to bring a portfolio (folder) with four pieces of documentation on the day of the contest. Bring to the registration desk and judges will pick them up.
    • Fashion Revue/Clothing Project Record
    • Consumer Comparison Worksheet
    • Written Commentary and picture of garment
    • Fabric swatch, if Category I (constructed)
  6. For State competition, this portfolio must be mailed to 4-H Congress 3-4 weeks ahead of time. Always keep a photocopy or scanned copy of these documents.
